Mazda RX-8's taut exterior gives perfect expression to the three major design objectives of dynamism, stability and tension, to create a form that gives a sense of motion even when stationary. Dramatic lines extend in three-dimensional relief from the aggressive front air intake through the body sides to the boot lid, clearly stating Mazda RX-8's dynamic performance potential from any angle. The balance of visual mass between the compact-looking cabin and relatively substantial form below the glass areas produces a low visual centre of gravity that conveys a reassuring impression of stability —an impression reinforced by pronounced overfenders and location of the wheels at the extreme corners of the body. In addition, the boldly contoured overfenders and pared-down overall body styling combine to give an instant impression of tension.

Interior

The comfortably snug interior is remade with more dynamic forms and an enhanced feel of quality. The centre stack broadens towards the top to give a thrusting sense of movement. The sporty blackout-type 3-meter cluster features a unique variable red zone in the tachometer that moves according to engine conditions, helping to prevent over-revving when engine temperature is low. The leather material used for the steering wheel cover is selected to give a higher tactile quality with an optimized, reassuring feeling of grip. The seats are monotone leather for a more mature cabin ambience, and the audio system receives Action Illumination to offer both visual confirmation of operation and a greater sense of delight.

Under the hood

By moving the intake and exhaust ports to the engine's side housing, Mazda engineers were able to achieve significant improvements in power output, fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions. First, overlap in intake/exhaust port timing is eliminated, allowing a leaner air-fuel mixture for better fuel economy. Second, adoption of a dual exhaust port system not only optimizes exhaust gas flow, it also allows later opening of the exhaust ports giving an increased expansion stroke for improved fuel efficiency and higher output. Third, intake port area is increased by 30% to achieve a larger intake volume and higher output. Finally, unburned fuel is carried over to the next combustion cycle to lower emissions.

Safety

In spite of the centre-pillarless design—a layout that maximizes the door opening area —Mazda RX-8 offers both the rigidity essential to sports car handling and crash-safety performance comparable with a conventional sedan. The secret is a virtual centre pillar built into the rear doors. This pillar, made of high-tensile steel and a thick aluminum plate, is joined to the body by heavy-duty door latches at the top and bottom to realize a design that is actually stronger than a conventional centre pillar. In addition front and rear doors also incorporate side impact bars optimally positioned to channel impact energy into the body.

Interior

The basic concept for the interior design was to create fun, dynamic styling that stirs excitement in the owner and expresses the freedom and performance offered by a lightweight sports car that's free of unnecessary complexity. To realize this concept, the designers conducted digital design studies using three-dimensional modeling software, developed the form of the cabin in accordance with the resulting data and, as with the exterior design, used materials and surface treatments reflecting the latest styling trends.

Safety

Active safety is primarily involved with keeping you in control of the vehicle so you can avoid hazards. And Mazda MX-5 features a number of advanced technologies to do this. A 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (4W-ABS) prevents wheel lockup during hard braking, even on slippery surfaces, allowing you to maintain control and steer around danger. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) works with 4W-ABS to minimize stopping distance by automatically adjusting brake force on the rear wheels according to weight distribution within the car. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) combines 4W-ABS with traction control to manage engine output and brake force on each wheel and minimize the risk of skids or spinning when cornering on slippery surfaces.

At the heart of Mazda CX-7's soul-stirring performance is the MZR 2.3 DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) turbo engine, delivering an awesome 175kW of power at 5000rpm. Step on the accelerator and the turbocharger and DISI force fuel directly into each cylinder for a more potent air/fuel mixture while keeping the cylinder relatively cool. The result is greater low-end torque along with better fuel efficiency to give you the best of both worlds: a more exciting, responsive drive that consumes less petrol.

The Mazda CX-7 is equipped with numerous safety functions to reduce the possibility of injury to occupants in the unlikely event of an accident. There comes a time, in the midst of its planned model cycle, when a revamp is necessary for many vehicle models. Sometimes the competition changes so quickly that new engines, new safety features, whole new drive trains are necessary to keep up. For the Mazda8, that time is now.

In a revolutionary turn of design philosophy that heralds a new era of distinctive and instantly recognisable Mazda cars, the Mazda8 is aimed at setting a trend in the MPV category. A trend many have tried to accomplish but have fallen behind.

Simply because when it comes to comfortable motoring, few brands come close to Mazda.

Exterior

The overall exterior of the new MPV conveys a more aggressive, road-hugging image thanks to the availability of the tasteful, subtle, body skirting. The metal trimmed skirting picks up on the boldness of the fascia and carries the prominent chromed Mazda badge in an extra large size. This small element effectively transforms the "zero" box minivan body shape into one "hero" that is edgier, better defined and more aesthetically pleasing. The clear head lights, curved-rectangular fog lights and large air intakes give the vehicle a stern and muscular outlook, pushing the design envelope upscale.

Unfortunately, things can get a little simple round the back. The only feature that resonates with the sporty appearance is the twin exhaust pipes. Its tail lights show hints of the previous Mazda6, especially the way it's shaped and positioned. Furthermore, despite the efforts of re-designing the back-end, it hasn't shaken off the old look of the Mazda5.

Interior
Like the exterior, the interior was made to please.

The MPV is pleasant to live with as it features high-quality materials, excellent ergonomics, and great seats. The sand beige leather-clad cabin of my test drive car was enticing and extraordinarily comfortable. The seating position feels high, thanks to the fully electric seat adjustments. The large window openings, which conveyed the sense that I was as much outside the vehicle as inside, also proved great for visibility, especially when parking in confined spaces. This helped a great deal, given the fact that MPVs don't usually come in sedan sizes.
