Mazda Biante MPV launched in Japan

Two engines are available with the Mazda Biante. The bigger of the two is a normally aspirated 2.3 liter DOHC engine, and the other is an improved version of Mazda’s normally aspirated 2.0 liter engine featuring DISI direct injection. 2WD models come with a 5-speed auto, while the 4WD models come with a 4-speed auto. The 2.3 liter’s 5-speed auto also adds sequential manual shifting.
Mazda hopes to sell 3,000 units of the new Mazda Biante every month. The Biante falls under the tall roof minivan segment much like the Nissan Elgrand and the Toyota Alphard. Tall roofs are desired by some families so that ingress and egress for those who have trouble bending down too much, especially the elderly. Mazda claims the Biante has the longest and widest interior (2,900mm long x 1,545mm wide x 1,350mm tall cabin dimensions) in the 2.0 liter minivan class.

The second row of seats can be adjusted fore and aft by 863mm, varying the amount of space between the second and third rows. Pushing it furthest to the back will create a sort of “living room” for the second row. Access to the second and third row is via a sliding door on each side of the minivan. Power sliding doors are also available standard with the 20S model, and optional on the other models. These powered sliding doors offer a safety feature where if something touches the door and obstructs its closing it will stop, much like power windows with safety features.
The air conditioning system comes with what Mazda calls a nanoe ion generator, which can neutralize bacteria, odors and allergens. This is standard on 4WD models and a factory installable option on the other models. There is also an allergen filter. A ceiling-mounted deodorizer absorbs tobacco, adhesive and other odors. The seats and floor mats also come with anti-bacterial coating.

Ford looking to sell most of its stake in Mazda?

According to a report by Japanese business daily Nikkei late last week, Ford is looking to sell a majority of its remaining 11% stake in Mazda – reducing it to 3% or less – to Sumitomo group businesses and other companies with working ties with Mazda.
The daily added that the shares sale is expected to lead towards both automakers slowly parting ways in terms of cooperation. Ford, however, has said that the report is mere speculation, and that its ownership stake in Mazda remains unchanged.
In acquiring 25% of Mazda’s outstanding shares, Ford became Mazda’s top shareholder in 1979, and in 1996 gained management control when it raised its stake to 33.4%.

Mazda2 Evil Track and Street concepts served at SEMA

The Mazda2 is full of Zoom-Zoom in its design. Besides platform buddy Ford Fiesta, the supermini class is mostly made out of more matured designs – the Volkswagen Polo is a good example. Since it already looks racy in stock form (we’re just talking about the hatchback, by the way) the 2 doesn’t need much work to look really hot. These SEMA concepts – Evil Track and Street – show some possibilities.
The grey Evil Track car was envisioned as a fully equipped car for series racing and was inspired by the Evil concept from last year’s LA show. Besides race-inspired graphics, the Evil Track sports a Mazda Design body kit, including side skirts, front and rear air-dam and carbon fibre rear deck spoiler. Mods include H&R race suspension and coil over kit, AWR full custom safety cage, Sparco Circuit pro seat, steering wheel, safety harness and fire system, AIM MXL Pista data acquisition system, race-tuned Magna-flow exhaust, 949 6UL 15×9 lightweight wheels and 225/45 Hoosier race rubber.

The Mazda2 Street meanwhile is a “streetwise, urban sport inspired version” of the B-segment hatch. It uses the same lightweight wheels as the Evil Track but with Toyo Proxes RA-1 R-compound tyres. Aesthetics are enhanced through the use of a light gray, superfine metallic body color and matte graphic accents.
“The versatility of Mazda vehicles is extraordinary. With just minor modifications to a stock Mazda, it can be ready for the track or a car show. Our SEMA cars demonstrate this ability; taking a vehicle from the dealership and making it a truly unique piece,” said Derek Jenkins, director design, Mazda North America.

Mazda to revive the RX-7 spirit with rotary powered RX-9?

We know for a fact that Mazda is sticking with the rotary engine, which the company sees as a vital part of its identity. A new sports car is also due for the Zoom-Zoom brand, as the RX-8 is about to enter its eighth year in production. The company showed off its latest Shinari four-door coupe concept few months ago, but now a report from Autocar UK points in the direction of an “RX-9″.
It was said that Mazda new-generation rotary engine is already in a late stage of development, and that this “16X” motor uses an electric supercharger and is bigger in capacity than the current RX-8 engine. 16X will be friendlier than the Renesis, which has a big appetite for unleaded and engine oil and does not meet Euro 5 standards.
The RX-9 will be a spiritual successor to the sexy RX-7, which we last saw in 2002. No four-doors or suicide doors apparently, as this will be a more focussed two-door coupe riding on the platform of the next-gen MX-5. It will have a kerb weight of around 1,250 kg, which isn’t much for over 300 bhp to haul.
The report adds that Mazda is still thinking whether to let the 16X engine run on petrol and sold in volume or become a flagship clean-air project running on hydrogen. We sure hope it’s the former they’re leaning to!

All-New 2011 Mazda BT-50 Global Pickup Truck

The Mazda BT-50 is the sister truck to Ford's all-new Ranger global small pickup. Both were developed by
a team led by Ford’s Australian engineering team, although Mazda had considerable input from the start.
While the trucks are almost identical underneath and share many parts, Mazda’s designers have given the BT-50 a radically different look. The Ranger is more traditional with predominantly straight edges, while Mazda
has gone for a much more shapely design that it describes as emotive.
The BT-50 shares certain hard-points with its Ford twin and has the same general dimensions, but it features a different shell and tub. Its dramatic nose sets it apart from other more conservative commercial vehicles and links it to the Mazda passenger car range. In Mazda’s own words, it wanted the BT-50 to look like a “sophisticated beast.”
The truck’s chief designer, Ryo Yanagisawa, said he looked to nature for inspiration when it came to shaping the BT-50 — more specifically, a picture of a lion.

The company says the BT-50 offers unique value with expressive styling, a comfortable and high-quality interior, the feel of a passenger car, and sporty and responsive driving dynamics that match the fun-to-drive characteristics that Mazda is all about.
While Ford released a lot of detail on its new Ranger, Mazda declined to release any information on the production BT-50.
It is likely there will be some sharing of the engine lineup Ford has announced, including the 2.2-liter four-cylinder and 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder turbo-diesels and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated gas engine, but Mazda is tight-lipped. It has already been announced that the two vehicles will be produced in Thailand next year. This plant is a joint venture between Ford and Mazda.

  • The Mazda BT-50 features a bright and spacious interior environment that brings a new level of sedan-like comfort and convenience to every occupant. Extensive efforts to suppress the generation of noise from the powertrain and to prevent noise from entering the cabin also make the BT-50 one of the quietest pickups in the class.

    Mazda RX-8

    Overview
  • Experience the Mazda RX-8 and you experience something to tally unique: the marriage of sports-driving excitement with comfort and quality. It's the perfect example of Mazda's long heritage of bringing sheer delight to drivers around the world, and the full realization of the Zoom-Zoom spirit.

  • Exterior
  • Mazda RX-8's taut exterior gives perfect expression to the three major design objectives of dynamism, stability and tension, to create a form that gives a sense of motion even when stationary. Dramatic lines extend in three-dimensional relief from the aggressive front air intake through the body sides to the boot lid, clearly stating Mazda RX-8's dynamic performance potential from any angle. The balance of visual mass between the compact-looking cabin and relatively substantial form below the glass areas produces a low visual centre of gravity that conveys a reassuring impression of stability —an impression reinforced by pronounced overfenders and location of the wheels at the extreme corners of the body. In addition, the boldly contoured overfenders and pared-down overall body styling combine to give an instant impression of tension.

  • Interior
  • The comfortably snug interior is remade with more dynamic forms and an enhanced feel of quality. The centre stack broadens towards the top to give a thrusting sense of movement. The sporty blackout-type 3-meter cluster features a unique variable red zone in the tachometer that moves according to engine conditions, helping to prevent over-revving when engine temperature is low. The leather material used for the steering wheel cover is selected to give a higher tactile quality with an optimized, reassuring feeling of grip. The seats are monotone leather for a more mature cabin ambience, and the audio system receives Action Illumination to offer both visual confirmation of operation and a greater sense of delight.

  • Under the hood
  • By moving the intake and exhaust ports to the engine's side housing, Mazda engineers were able to achieve significant improvements in power output, fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions. First, overlap in intake/exhaust port timing is eliminated, allowing a leaner air-fuel mixture for better fuel economy. Second, adoption of a dual exhaust port system not only optimizes exhaust gas flow, it also allows later opening of the exhaust ports giving an increased expansion stroke for improved fuel efficiency and higher output. Third, intake port area is increased by 30% to achieve a larger intake volume and higher output. Finally, unburned fuel is carried over to the next combustion cycle to lower emissions.

  • Safety
  • In spite of the centre-pillarless design—a layout that maximizes the door opening area —Mazda RX-8 offers both the rigidity essential to sports car handling and crash-safety performance comparable with a conventional sedan. The secret is a virtual centre pillar built into the rear doors. This pillar, made of high-tensile steel and a thick aluminum plate, is joined to the body by heavy-duty door latches at the top and bottom to realize a design that is actually stronger than a conventional centre pillar. In addition front and rear doors also incorporate side impact bars optimally positioned to channel impact energy into the body.

  • Mazda MX-5

    Overview
  • Jinba ittai. A Japanese phrase that means horse and rider becoming one. And it's the essence of Mazda MX-5. You'll feel it the moment you take the wheel: you and the car become a single unit joined in the joy of the road. The car responds to your every wish - almost before you think of it - and suddenly driving becomes fun again. From everyday trips around town to long-distance open-top touring, Mazda MX-5 makes the journey an experience to savour. It's Zoom-Zoom driving in an exhilarating new form that promises you lots of fun.

  • Exterior
  • More than just a driving machine, Mazda MX-5 brings you genuine pleasure and pride of ownership. The smoothly rounded, flowing exterior lines restate the fun and friendly appeal of the original in a totally contemporary style, destined to become a new classic. And the interior is another gorgeous restatement of Mazda design aesthetics. The T-shaped instrument panel features a horizontal, high-gloss piano-black band with silver accents, while leather seats have heavy top-stitching to further enhance the impression of quality craftsmanship.

  • Interior
  • The basic concept for the interior design was to create fun, dynamic styling that stirs excitement in the owner and expresses the freedom and performance offered by a lightweight sports car that's free of unnecessary complexity. To realize this concept, the designers conducted digital design studies using three-dimensional modeling software, developed the form of the cabin in accordance with the resulting data and, as with the exterior design, used materials and surface treatments reflecting the latest styling trends.

  • Under the hood
  • as well as the car lightness and a high rigidity, it is a prior for lightweight sports car to improve the steering wheel operation that the weight balanced 50:50, the lowest possible center of gravity and the lowest possible yaw-inertia-moment. The optimal perfect 50:50 front/rear weight distribution (Get on two people) is achieved with the engine moved rearward by 135mm, the fuel tank moved lowered 120mm from its previous position, and the battery moved ahead of the engine diminishes. At the same time, the net change in the center of gravity, height is a worthwhile 18mm, and the yaw-inertia moment is 2% smaller than that of the second-generation MX-5.

  • Safety
  • Active safety is primarily involved with keeping you in control of the vehicle so you can avoid hazards. And Mazda MX-5 features a number of advanced technologies to do this. A 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (4W-ABS) prevents wheel lockup during hard braking, even on slippery surfaces, allowing you to maintain control and steer around danger. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) works with 4W-ABS to minimize stopping distance by automatically adjusting brake force on the rear wheels according to weight distribution within the car. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) combines 4W-ABS with traction control to manage engine output and brake force on each wheel and minimize the risk of skids or spinning when cornering on slippery surfaces.

  • Safety

  • The Mazda CX-7 is equipped with numerous safety functions to reduce the possibility of injury to occupants in the unlikely event of an accident. In particular, the newly developed curtain air bags provide further enhanced safety by protecting occupants even in roll-over accidents whereas previous curtain air bags were limited to protection in only side collisions.

  • Mazda 8 MPV

    Mazda 8 MPV
There comes a time, in the midst of its planned model cycle, when a revamp is necessary for many vehicle models. Sometimes the competition changes so quickly that new engines, new safety features, whole new drive trains are necessary to keep up. For the Mazda8, that time is now.

In a revolutionary turn of design philosophy that heralds a new era of distinctive and instantly recognisable Mazda cars, the Mazda8 is aimed at setting a trend in the MPV category. A trend many have tried to accomplish but have fallen behind.

Simply because when it comes to comfortable motoring, few brands come close to Mazda.

    Exterior

The overall exterior of the new MPV conveys a more aggressive, road-hugging image thanks to the availability of the tasteful, subtle, body skirting. The metal trimmed skirting picks up on the boldness of the fascia and carries the prominent chromed Mazda badge in an extra large size. This small element effectively transforms the "zero" box minivan body shape into one "hero" that is edgier, better defined and more aesthetically pleasing. The clear head lights, curved-rectangular fog lights and large air intakes give the vehicle a stern and muscular outlook, pushing the design envelope upscale.

Unfortunately, things can get a little simple round the back. The only feature that resonates with the sporty appearance is the twin exhaust pipes. Its tail lights show hints of the previous Mazda6, especially the way it's shaped and positioned. Furthermore, despite the efforts of re-designing the back-end, it hasn't shaken off the old look of the Mazda5.

    Interior
Like the exterior, the interior was made to please.

The MPV is pleasant to live with as it features high-quality materials, excellent ergonomics, and great seats. The sand beige leather-clad cabin of my test drive car was enticing and extraordinarily comfortable. The seating position feels high, thanks to the fully electric seat adjustments. The large window openings, which conveyed the sense that I was as much outside the vehicle as inside, also proved great for visibility, especially when parking in confined spaces. This helped a great deal, given the fact that MPVs don't usually come in sedan sizes.
